Posted Fri Apr 27, 2012, 5:15pm Subject: Cleaning the Portafilter
When you use a regular portafiler (as opposed to a bottomless or "naked" one), the oils and residue from your pulls will leave a coating on the inside of your pf. How often do you clean your pf out? I do mine daily (after 6 - 10 singles) but I wonder if I should let it go longer.
In your experience, does an uncleaned portafilter affect the taste in in the cup (I don't see why it wouldn't)?
My new (very used) portafilter (pressurized) is very gummy and nasty, so I soaked it overnight in hot water. It helped a lot, but I think I still need to soak it in some sort of solution to get at the innards of the pf. I am thinking maybe Oxiclean. Any ideas? I have some phosphoric acid and will have some Dezcal next week, but I don't want to wait a week to soak it. However, I may have to. Gummy, gunky, sticky, old coffee... yuck!
