LOL! Remember the book "Instant Freeze-Dried Computer Programming in Basic"? I am looking at a copy right now. I taught at a private school for gifted children and we had a computer lab I built with 16 Vic-20's with two floppy drives, hooked in groups of 8, each with a "Vic-Switch" because the floppy drives were too expensive to have one at each computer. Each had a tape drive though. 2.8Kb user available memory after boot, and in the second semester the kids were writing graphic games using ascii characters, peek, poke, etc. I also still have the Vic-20 and Commodore 64 programming guides!

I never played with Commodore or Vic 20, I was a Rat Shack man. My first use of a personal computer was in the Army when a buddy built a Radio Shack model 1 computer.
A few years later, I bought a CoCo1 with 16K of ram, for only $750, what a HUGE improvement from the RS1! AND you did not need to solder it together yourself, it was ready to hook up to your TV right out of the box!!
If you wanted a program to do ANYTHING you had to write it yourself and I stored on a portable tape recorder. I could not see spending $2 on a certified computer quality tape when regular C90 was under a buck!
A stand alone floppy drive was over $500 and was a device I could not afford.
When I took basic in Collage (after I got out of the Army), the IBM personal computer came out and it was a dream machine for all of us in class as it was priced WAY above anything we could afford!
OH, BTW, I still HAVE a 1200b modem, I paid way too much for it to throw it away. Much like my first AT computer. I paid $1000 EXTRA to get a total of 1000K of ram (seperate chips only please, no Dimms etc!) I still have that motherboard as "art" because it was yet another thing I just paid so much for, the whole computer was in the ball park of $4K in 1983..... how things have changed!

My first computer- an 8088. I paid the extra for the full 640kb of memory and upgraded to EGA graphics! About five years ago I learned that the entire 8088 computer was available in a single chip. I wrote a program for the Vic 20 to display various patterns so that I could set the convergence on my color TV.. Remember convergence adjustment? Heck.. I'm lucky to remember what I had for dinner last night! ;-)

Now back to your regularly sponsored thread... Top of the grind hand grinder for espresso is a Orphan Espresso Pharos. Lever no steamed milk, There are come cute Caravels on the Italy Ebay site. Even with shipping they are not too bad. Orphan sells parts for them. I am tempted to play with one. I like the look. (I also have a great steamer on my Oscar) Other than that there are tons of used Starbucks espresso machines on craigslist for the 100 mark.
