Espresso: NS Oscar Grinder: La Cimbali Junior
Posted Wed May 30, 2012, 10:17am Subject: NS Oscar, La Cimbali Junior and Rocky crema differences
Purchased used Oscar and Junior grinder for home use...cleaned, backflushed & descaled, new grinder burrs etc and both worked like new, great shots, crema, steam. Of course, got hooked and had to have a setup at work, so got a second Oscar and this time a Rocky doser, again cleaned up, backflushed & descaled, new grinder burrs... Initially took longer to dial in the right settings on the Rocky (7-8 from true 0) versus the Junior (4-5 from true 0), but working great now.
But, the 'better' setup with the Junior grinder is now giving less reliable crema than the machine with the Rocky. Also, always seems to be a wetter puck/more grinds left in the portfiller from Junior grinder versus drier, solid Rocky puck. Clean group with paper towel & brush after each use, regular backflush, similar date beans, Redbird and Red Line...so can't figure out what's accounting for the change and difference between the setups.
Time for a fine-tuning twist of the Junior grinder setting, or is something else potentially amiss? thanks

First thing I would do to trouble shoot this is I would switch the grinders but keep the beans the same. It could just be a difference in the grinders.
If the crema follows the grinders then you have your answer it is not the Oscars. If the crema is still off on the one Oscar then you need to figure out what is different. Maybe the pstat is set differently. Maybe one pump is going out.
