You'll notice a considerable improvement in the quality of the drink once you go to a proper burr grinder. Even moreso when you move away from using pressurized portafilters.
Like CoffeeNoobie (?) said, everyone has gotta start somewhere. If it is "Good enough" for you, then so be it. :)
My advice? When you have time and the opportunity, make it a point to have a drink from a really decent coffee shop and compare that to what you are making. That will give you something to aspire to eventually. Nobody buys $20k worth of tools for their garage all at once.. They start out with a screwdriver here, a wrench there..
The latter half is the more important part. Once you go to a proper unpressurized portafilter, the crema will be "real". Real crema has a bitter taste, kind of like carbonated water. Good crema isn't always a sign of a good shot, but it is a good sign that there is plenty of extraction.
That is good to hear! Eventually, you'll get down to drinking short Macchiato Lattes and then when you drink the drip coffee at work, you'll find that maybe you only need one cube of sugar instead of the usual two.. or maybe even no sugar at all if the coffee was prepared properly.
Glad to hear you are enjoying your machine.
BTW, If you can mail me privately, I'd like to know where in Canada you are?

Oh, I'm about as far east as you can go in Canada before you have to start treading water. I fly Search and Rescue out of Gander Newfoundland. 18 more months and I'm posted off this gawd forsaken rock and I'm never coming back...
One of the reasons I went with the Phillips (other than I could actually have it delivered here) is that you can get a non pressurized "cup" to replace the portafilter.

Nah, I'm good.
I can say whatever I want, my @$$ is "un-bite-able".
I'm well past my "pension time" and when I say I'm never coming back I mean it.....what they say or do at this point is only a matter of whether or not I want to do it.
I only came here in the first place because I agreed to help them out of a tough spot. Now that I've experienced it, I'm not coming back. 24 years in SAR and I've seen enough misery. I intend to end my career on a high note in a nice place.
That's not to say they can't try to send me somewhere, but at this point I will decide if I go or not....
