I was suggesting you make a funnel that would close most of the gap between your portafilter and where the grinds come out of the grinder. If you look closely at my photo you will see it is a basket not a portafilter. I am using the W and just the basket is sitting on the scale in a cup.

A mouse pad works well as a tamping mat, but you'll still get stray grounds on the counter and occasional drips when disengaging the portafilter. Note that these stray wits will be on the machines as well as the countertop (and maybe the floor).
The best thing to address this is a roll of paper towels and a bottle of Simple Green spray. Although bar towels may appear to be a more attractive option, The coffee stains will be a b**ch to get out, even with bleach.
To get coffeestains out of your dishtowels/Bartowels make a mixture of Cafiza brewhead cleaner and hot water (Note it will foam like mad if the water is nearly boiling) Cafiza is the brand name I know of for a Trisodium Phosphate backflushing product, but it is probably called different things in other parts of the world. Whatever you backflush with will also clean your espresso-stained shop-rags. Wash your hands afterward, it really dries out your skin.

I just soak my coffee stained towels in citric acid I get in bulk then wash and bleach as needed. They might not be bright white but they look clean enough.
