Did YOU?!?!?! The review is 10 years old, and no longer valid in any way, shape, or form as a) the machines are not the same now as they were a decade ago, and b) so many other machines have entered the market that are far superior in the SBDU class.

Obsolete? Hardly. I'm not sure what you are reading, or THINKING, for that matter. We acknowledge that distribution of the grind in the basket is VERY important, but a level tamp, making sure the edges of the basket are sealed is as well. You will NEVER get consistency shot after shot without a proper stainless steel tamper. No one said doing proper espresso at home was cheap. perhaps you should have done a bit more research.
That said, I can't imagine not finding a fairly inexpensive 57mm tamper from a Euro source. You are buying and selling gear (mostly lower grade) at an alarming rate. At least use the money you get back for a tamper. Then BEFORE you purchase next time, ASK for advice. We are here to help. But please know that the espresso world has begun changing a bit more rapidly...new machines, grinders, etc so LOOK at the date of a published article as well as it's content.
Eric, I beg to differ. What you say can work with a lever...I KNOW this, but a NON professional, a Beginner, as is our OP will find better consistency with a nice level tamp, especially to prevent edge channeling. Your statement "a perfect fit is not a requirement either?" Sorry, I believe that is not correct, or craftsmen like Reg Barber, Richard Penney, and others would have been out of business LONG ago. I posted regarding CONSISTENCY. Period.

You think what you want about the importance of that steel tamper - I will use mine or what ever else is handy (wood, plastic, spice bottle, etc) and pull the same shot most every time. It comes back to dose and grind - that is where consistency matters. A scale is a better tool for improving consistency - even if a nice looking tamper looks better than a scale...
