Thinking about getting one of the VST baskets. Maybe its already been discussed here, but does anyone taste a difference between, say, a 20 gram versus 22 gram basket. Is it solely about how large of shot you want, or does it create other desirable characteristics?

there are definite taste differences between different weight dosed shots. If you're looking at a 20 or 22g basket, then I figure it's safe to assume you own a bottomless pf (otherwise, you will need to buy one in order to use those large baskets). Why don't you try making one shot with your standard double basket and another with your "triple" and then taste them side by side? It'll give you an idea which you like better.

I use my 18 g most of all. I use redbird blue jag. If you know what coffee you will use most then find out what the size the roaster recommends for it.

The 'deal' I believe is the precision with which they are made.
Each basket comes with a little info sheet which tells you that it passed various tests, and what size the holes are (whilst it looks impressive, it seems to me to be rather pointless e.g. no x-axis on the graph?!)
Anyway, I have the 18g ridgeless, use it in a bottomless pf, and it made a HUGE difference to the original gaggia basket I had been using...I know it seems like it's OTT (I got mine for christmas, and didn't expect it to be more than just a gimmicky extra) but it actually is fantastic.
I now need a better fitting tamper (I think) because I don't like doing a N-E-S-W tamp.
Back to the topic title - I use 18g to make a double shot, but for one cup of coffee - I dose as close to 18g as I can, since they put so much effort into being precise, I figured I ought to too! However VST do say the baskets have a tolerance of +/- 1g
