I want to take this oppotunity to ask something i've read conflicting reports on -- Does leaving the portafilter locked in the group head overnight and whenever it's not in use affect the group head's longetivity or whatever? Some have told me that it does but i've never really looked into it.

Brian, the idea of leaving a gasket compressed would - in common thought - cause it to become misshapen and lead to premature failure. In company of espresso enthusiasts, replacing the group head/portafilter gasket is something which is undertaken on a proactively regular schedule to maintain a supple seal and allow relative ease in keeping the portafilter in place during the pressure transit of extraction.
Some of us will use functions which allow the equipment to heat up and be ready for us before we leave our beds in the morning, thus the tendency to have the assembly fully engaged and ensuring good heat transfer from the group to the PF.
Many will, as part of their regular cleaning and back flushing, remove the gasket to clean it and the seating surface behind it. This adds the benefit of physically releasing the shower screen and allowing manual cleaning of it and the areas behind it. (Sometimes a chemical back flush isn't enough.)
In any case, your best practice is to have spare gaskets to hand for quick and simple recovery should you find a need to replace it.
As to portafilter damage or to the lock ring in a group head, I have heard some note the Breville 900 (BDB) has a hard plastic friction surface that some owners have over torqued (?) and deformed. Generally, most machines this is not a problem... at least I have had no experience other than aging gaskets on my past machines. Cheers, Chris
