I have a ranchilio epoca single head machine.  For the last several days, when I steam my milk, there is a very loud squealing when the tip is in the milk.  When I take the tip out and turn the steam on, everything looks fine.  The milk consistency is also think, no microfoam, despite no change in my technique.

Thanks!!!!

When was the last time you cleaned the holes in your steam tip or unscrewed it, thoroughly cleaned the tip and cleaned out the arm?

yeah, I agree it sounds like you need to clean it.  If you have a large test tube (like the ones that vanilla beans sometimes come in), you can fill it with wand cleaner, then set it in a pitcher or glass on the drip tray with the wand submerged.  It'll allow you to do a really good soak, and then all you'll have to do is rinse it thoroughly.

Does it sound the same as at Starbucks when the PBC steams milk? A loud squeal?

Most likely it is poor methodology on your part.

If it starts to squeal, drop the tip slightly out of the milk then go back, all should be well. YMMV!
