Espresso: Breville BES870
Posted Wed Jun 4, 2014, 3:04am Subject: Breville BES870
I purchased a Breville BES870 a few months ago. Suddenly the expresso gauge now hits high and the water won't flow through properly, I can't tamp the coffee at all and if I do, it won't run through at all. Does anyone know what the problem may be?

There are several shortcomings with that machine, the built in grinder is marginal at best, the thermocoil is the least consistent way to heat water regardless of a PID, the dual wall baskets are referred to as Pressurized here but at least they supply you a single wall basket. The "razor" feature is very questionable, dose is by weight and changes by grind so when you "trim off" the top of the dose of beans to a set level, you get different dosses of beans.
Pressurized baskets do not need to be tamped, they just need to be lightly leveled as all the flow resistance is in the pressure device in the basket. The grind changes all the time, when was the last time you adjusted the grind? How old is your coffee, that will change the requirement for grind size.
What is high on the gauge? You should be brewing at about 9 bar of pressure. If it is higher than that, then the pressure device may be malfunctioning, the coffee is not ground properly and the gauge may be having issues but that will not affect the flow of coffee but the first two will.
