Has anyone ever experienced hearing a crackling sound inside the portafilter while brewing?

I have heard this with the last two different beans (black cat and local roaster) I used.  It has happened infrequently.  Little to no creama and very oily surface after pull.  Has the look of black water and taste is rank.  Does anyone know if this caused by grind or temp?

I would say definitely temp.  I don't see how the puck should be rigid enough to actually cause any sound if it were fractured...

Run a few ounces of water out of the group and see if it makes the same sound.  It will be steaming as well if the temp is too high.  I get this sound on my Tea, but the only reason I hear it is because I flush a good amount of water through the group before pulling a shot after its been idle for a while.  It's a definite crackling sound, and it's the water.  Also, your description of the resultant cup seems congruous with this suggestion as well.
