Drip: Brew and Go!

Hey everyone,

This is my first post here.  I must say this site is great.

Ok, so here is my senario:

I work in a coffe house owned by a local coffee company in Baton Rouge, LA.  They call me a barista, but I prefer the spanish "baristador"-- sounds more masculine.  Recently I have been having more and more customers ask,  "Which has more caffeine, espresso or drip coffee?"  I think the question was prompted mostly by students during finals at the State University.

I am aware the caffeine content depends on the roast and brand of coffee machine and other variables.

Does anyone have a reliable source either internet or book (hopefully one I can aquire from the library) that will give me an accurate measure of caffeine in drip coffee, espresso, and ice coffee?

What I have been finding has been saying that one shot of espresso (1oz) is equal to about 12 oz of drip.

I would love to share this with my coworkers and customers.

Peace and Thanks,
Paul Cat

This has been asked many times, but searching this board got too many hits (go figure). So I searched for "amount of caffeine in espresso" on google and found some good hits. The Frequently Asked Questions about Caffeine and others quote the same 100mg per serving. The Medic8® Family Health Guide even attempted to answer the tough question, How much is too much?

Drip has a little more per serving, but then, an espresso is alot smaller so you can always
take two servings.

The caffeine content isnt everything. A espresso is more concentrated and the caffeine will
reach the bloodstream faster. Also, espresso is much better out of a stomach-acid viewpoint IMHO.
Dripcoffee usually have a lot av acid, and if its been on the plate too long like in lunch restaurants,
WAY too much. So i rather drink two double espressos instead of one mug of drip coffee.
It works fine for me, and i had some probabls with too much acid in the stomach for a while.

I find caffeine to be self-limiting in my espresso.  If I have too many shots I'm vibrating too much to get the PF locked into the machine.
