OK, maybe that is an exaggeration but I think this forum software is WAY behind any modern forum system - it literally only one small step above the look, feel, and functionality of BBS software I was using on the Commodore 64.
I'd think with all the activity and sponsorship that the CG owners would be able to afford a modern forum app... since many are actually FREE.
It would be nice to have modern (circa 2000) conveniences like...
PM ability to manage subscriptions In forum searches a decent markup language a forum that did not look like ASCII graphics
is there any movement toward a modern system or are we stick with this one for another 10 years?

You know I used to think the same thing. But you know what? I've grown to like how it is, with all its tatters, etc. Its like your favorite well worn chair, something you always feel comfortable sitting in. Like a cozy little home.

Why? Because this was likely more acceptable 5-8 years ago, whenever the last major revision was done. Mark's murmured about site updates coming up for a while now, but I'm sure the money just isn't there to get that kind of thing overnighted. If the community can't take it anymore, we could always take up a collection to help out. Otherwise, take it for what it is - fairly usable, not terribly pretty, but awfully informative.
Short-term solution: write your own Chrome plugin to change the CSS after load and give it your own personal facelift!

It would take way more than a CSS change... there are usability features missing. I could care less about a pretty UI... having a forum that was anywhere close to being up to date on usability features would be nice. I think it is disrespectful to the user community to have such an outdated forum app when very good forum apps are free and Mark is getting a lot of money from sponsorship.
I guess it must take a long time to save up all the money that FREE software costs... you know especially the time to caount all those zeros. http://www.phpbb.com/ http://vanillaforums.org/ ... and many more
