Espresso: DeLonghi and Krup Drip: DeLonghi

Greetings All,
I'm fairly new to the whole coffee scene, at least the way you do it here, although I've been a coffee drinker almost all my life it seems, I'm new to making espresso and capuccino, forgive me if my spelling isn't correct.
I've got a Delonghi espresso machine and the way I've always used it, when I turn it on, I keep all the valves closed so that the boiler can do it's thing and build up steam, then I turn the selector to strong, and the presurized water shoots through the grounds and voila, espresso.
I recently got another machine, this one is a Krup IL Primo, which I guess is an older machine, but I'm not able to find a way to close all the valves, so the pressure builds inside the machine.
My question is, have I been using my DeLonghi wrong, and the valve that goes to the pot is supposed to be opened when you turn the machine on?
