There's a grinder on eBay going for cheap, and it sure as hell looks like a Mazzer:

As of this posting, it's bid at $110

1) If it really is a Mazzer, it shows how important it is to include brands & printing on items when you're selling them.

2) ALOT can happen in the remaining 1 day/9 hours of an auction.  Most experienced Ebay shoppers snipe in the remaining seconds to keep "nibblers" from driving the price up.  (Bid once, bid your maximum & bid either early or late (if two people bid the same amount, the earliest bid wins) whichever you feel the most comfortable with AND round your bid up by a few cents to reduce the chances of a tie.)

3) You've just alienated anyone here who may have bid (or planned on it), since it's a live auction.

4) Probably at least one person will wonder if this is your auction (you're new here & have only 2 posts under your belt) & you're trying to drive up the price.

Ah!  You've discovered my evil plan!  Curses!  Excuse me while I go delete my coffeegeek account in shame.  Who knows if I will ever live this down.

Nah, I don't think #4 is the case here.  No point in leaving out the brand name of the grinder if you know what you have is good.

I do think #3 is a distinct possibility, albeit an honest mistake???

Waste of time.

It'll be bid up to the point that if you buy new burrs for it it'll cost more than a new one.

And/or, maybe it was used to grind that revolting flavored "coffee," which the lucky winner will enjoy with their espresso at no extra charge until they dump it on someone else.

Signed,
Another eBay Cynic

Fair enough.  My name is Andrew Bushnell.  The sellers name is JohnB.  I'm located in San Diego.  The seller is located in Danville (Northern CA).  My occupation is "restaurant manager" on my profile.  My profile also indicates that my current grinder is a Mazzer Super Jolly.  The seller doesn't seem to know who manufactured his grinder, much less which model it is (looks different than a Super Jolly to me, based on the plastic collar where the beans hopper meets the grinding chamber).

Even the cheapest Mazzer sells for $500 new.  If I were savvy enough to find CoffeeGeek.com, create a profile and comment on a silly skullhead tamper as a decoy two weeks before shilling my own auction on eBay, you might think that I'd also be savvy enough to either set a higher starting price or at least set a reserve price at least half of the new price.

The auction details show that the seller seems unaware that his grinder is a Mazzer (and in fact it may not be.  But it sure looks like the Super Jolly I use at work).  I'd imagine that if he were to turn the machine around and look at the metal plate by the power cord, he'd see who the manufacturer is.  Judging just from the photo, I'd say it looks like a Mazzer based on the shape of the beans hopper and lid, the design of the plastic "gate" in the beans hopper, the stepless grind adjustment, the design of the grinds hopper and lid, the shape of the doser lever, the position of the built-in tamper (as well as the unused third screw which would allow for a different position on the other side), the shape of the portafilter holder, the shape of the base of the unit, and the overall design  of the machine.  This I can tell just looking at the photo.  If I were actually trying to sell the item, perhaps I would be better off listing all of this information on the actual auction site, where people are bidding on it?

But you're probably right.  It's all a conspiracy to piss you off.

Many people (ok, not everyone, but many) don't post live auction links because you never know if someone on the board has already got their eye on the item.  Drawing attention to it will naturally drive up the price & is considered bad 'netiquette by many.  And when the live auction is posted by someone who joined the board a few days ago & had only 1 previous post.....well, it could appear to be spam.

Didn't think of that.  I am way too naive for my own good.
