What you do with you money is your business, but I don't see an SJ as much of an upgrade from a Vario in a home environment. A big conical will have a large effect on your espresso making, but unless you are experiencing mechanical problems with the Vario, you're not going to see a dramatic improvement in work flow or in your cup. There are very real reasons to choose a commercial flat burr over the Vario, but quality in the cup isn't a big one.
Having had a Super Jolly and now owning a Vario (nearly 3 years old and trouble free) I can tell you that the SJ is NOT an upgrade. In fact, I sold mine to get the Vario, which is a much better grinder for home use. If you want a better grinder you'll need to go north of the SJ.

Once you get your upgrade I know of a local buyer looking for a Barazta grinder used. If you wanna save a few on a bran spankin new commercial grinder macap's are awesome! I think the MC4 would be a good upgrade.
Sadly no. I had the M4D digital version this guy. Very nice grinder that is my second favorite to those I've owned (Mini, SJ, M4d, and Vario, along with PeDe, Zass, and Pharos hand grinders). However, the Vario produces a better result in the cup. Go bigger or stay put.

Sorry to go off topic but hows the Pharos compare? I only ask as I have the Vario and a Major. I find the Major to be better than the Vario but the commercial aspects is not as good (grind retention and difficulty in cleaning).

I have read that home grinders like the vario, motors are only suppose to handle grinding in small doses. Larger commercial machines have bigger motors to help drive the burrs for a long period of time. For home use theres not a huge diffrence because your only grinding in small amounts. I have plans to open a cafe in the future so it's all practice to me using a Macap MX. I also happened to find it before purchasing a Baratza myself.
