After engaging in more negotiations and reading a bit more about what one should be looking for in a machine at this price point, I'm now looking exclusively for a Vibiemme Double Domobar V3 (the 2011 re-release). I know that narrows the field of purchase candidates considerably, but in the perverted words of Woody Allen, the heart wants what it wants. And I would think that satisfying that want is probably the best path to avoiding upgradeitis for a few extra years. I'm looking forward to your leads and offers.
And maybe this will prime the pump a little: shoot me a lead that ends in a sale, and I'll send you a pound of the espresso blend from a great, trained-by-Intelligentsia local roaster Red Band in Davenport, IA. Thanks everyone for all of your help.

Brewtus III for $900 on Austin Craigslist. Who knows, maybe he'd even be willing to take an offer or do that price with shipping? I bet if you do some research, it will turn out that you need to spend a whole lot more to get a machine that can perform noticeably better. A lot of good options out there, and patience will pay off!

Thanks for the pointer! The shipping from Texas is a little daunting - both for safety and for cost reasons - though for just $1000 with shipping, the deal still sounds like a good one.

Bump!
Thanks, everyone, for the offers to help with shipping, as well as for the product pointers. For what it's worth, I'm currently negotiating over a Brewtus IV ($1200-$1400 range) and a Vibiemme DD 3 ($1600-$1800). I'd be happy with either machine - though you read what I wrote about the Domobar... - but I'm definitely open to offers from newcomers or anything else people happen to run across.

I happened upon one at idrinkcoffee.com in their open box specials with PID. They'll send you actual photos and shipping says it's free from Canada; or is that at least in Canada. It's open box as it apparently sustained some minor damage, but considering it's essentially new you may be interested. At least it may be worth a look. From their description, they went with the larger diameter steam wand. It is a touch more than $1600, but if you factor in free shipping (it's 70 lbs(?)) it may still be good value. Here's the link:
