Just something to consider - check out the Concept Art Pop Tampers at 1st LIne - in the $38 range for the base and tamper (as long as you don't need a fancy wood handle and get the basic).

Tamper Base
Tamper Handle (The handle comes in different colors)

This tamper was recommended to me recently for my new Cremina lever when I was looking at other tampers - and some WAY more expensive.  I have been using it a couple weeks now and VERY impressed with the weight, feel, etc.  For the price it would be hard to beat.  For example, OE sells a tamper for a little less than this one, and it is not very substantial or weighted that well IMHO.

If you add a couple of other things to the order (I got some Joe Glo, a shot glass) and make it over $50 you can get free shipping.

Thanks for the tip! Do you happen to know whether the threading on the bolt in the handle is 3/8 16? I bought a 49.4 mm US curve base on eBay, and now just need the handle.

5/16"  - just went into the woodshop and it threaded onto a 5/16" bolt, definitely not 3/8"

Too bad you just got another type - these are a nice tamper for the money.

Well, in the end I bought a 49.4 mm US curve base from precisiontampermaker on eBay for just under $35 delivered. The base has arrived safely and is of very high quality. I went to a local hardware store and noticed that they were selling garden tools with ash handles for under $3. Bought one, removed the handle, cut the handle and reshaped it to my liking, drilled an appropriate hole, bought a 3/8 16 tapping bolt ($1.35), put it into the handle, cut down the bolt to the appropriate length, finished the handle with some poly, added a couple of teflon spacers ($0.65), and voila: here is my new tamper!

Like it?

I was just showing my wife... I think what you did is very commendable, and I always love resourcefulness.  Send me an email of where you bought that base... just curious.
