I've been interested in tearing apart an HX machine to learn more about the internal workings first-hand... there's only so much that I can learn from looking at diagrams. I've asked repairmen for local coffeeshops and perused Craigslist, but I haven't found any old, broken down espresso machines. I'm not looking to refurbish one, so I don't really need it in working condition.
So, does anyone in the SF Bay Area have a busted espresso machine picking up dust in the garage? Maybe one that you thought you might turn into a summer restoration project, but it never took off? Or maybe a machine that you were going to repair, but ended up finding it was totaled?
Since the machine is likely broken and since I'm not looking to pawn off the parts, I'm certainly not looking for anything worth much, so keep the $500 just-replace-one-part deals for a lucky soul who will actually bring it back to glory.

I had the same issue last year. I posted an ad on craigslist specifying what I wanted and that I was willing to shell out $50 for one that was complete with portafilters, commercial class only, ... Took me 2 days to get a very nice example from one of the local restorers for $40. Got parts out of it that I also hope to use in a frankenspresso machine someday too.
