Subject: Katz Coffee Roasters Houston, TX ????

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new to this world.  I'm searching for roasters in Texas, and I think I know of most of them.  I'm wondering if anyone has any opinions on Katz Coffee out of Houston.  I can't seem to find any sort of reviews on their beans.  Any info would be appreciated.  Thanks.

I've never herd of Katz Coffee and I have lived in Houston for 15 years.
Maybe this will work better if you list the roasters you know....

I was raised in Austin and moved to Houston in 1992, and the only Katz's I know are Mark and Berry
(...you know them too......"Katz's never Kloses"......and ..."any other candidate just ain't kosher...!")

I believe these are all located in Austin:
Cuvee
Ruta Maya
TX Coffee Traders
Little City
Los Armadillos

I'm wondering about Katz's (www.katzcoffee.com) because the coffee shop I work at is thinking about switching to their coffee.  I wanted to see if anyone on here had tasted it, or had any opinions on them.

I do know of the Katz's that never closes, but I think it's a different Katz??

Hmmmm........interesting.  Apparently they have a downtown location.
I'd assume that is a different Katz, but maybe it's Barry (Mark's son).
I've still never heard of them until now.  ;)

Cuvee used to be in Houston (Spring), but I know he's been doing business in Austin with a couple of good shops.
More roasters in Austin include Anderson's (on Kirby Lane) and Triannon and Mozart's (Lake Austin Blvd?)

In Houston we have www.Hopsoncoffee.com (wonderful roast-to-order service, ships same day in most cases)
And there's also Mitalena and Java Coffee & Tea Co.

it is most definitely a different Katz.

the owner of Katz's coffee's name is Kavi.

Other than that his customers in Austin are Lava Java,  and Cafe Caffeine however that is about all I can tell you

some clarification on Cuvee.

our roasting facility is still in Spring, but we now have a Sales office open in Austin and will be moving the roasting facility to Austin once we can find a suitable location.

Chuck,

I'd love to get in touch with you... shoot me an email?

I've had their coffee - have been buying it on the way to work at Dry Creek & Onion Creek (coffee/food/bar establishments in the Heights in Houston) for a while now.  I really like it.  They have quite a bit that is Free Trade / Organic (if not all??)  Anyway, I think it's very good - have enjoyed the darker roasts, but they have quite a variety that I haven't tried.  Their warehouse is in Garden Oaks, I think, and have a business office somewhere else - I think close to downtown.  I know they sell by the pound at the Bayou City Farmer's Market, but not sure where else.  Here is their web site - not much info, but there is a contact page if you wanted to call them to find out more info.  http://www.katzcoffee.com/

As for roasters in Texas, I've ordered often from Java Coffee and Tea.  I especially like their Espresso Marco Polo and the shipping prices for Texas residents can't be beat.  I've also ordered from Lola Savannah in Houston.  Cafe Maison is another in Houston though I have not ordered any of their products and it appears their website is down.

Quite a few places in Houston use Katz for their beans, it is fairly good to my taste though I don't find the espresso to have a very rich flavor.  Many of my friends really enjoy the espresso though.  I know Yorktown deli uses Katz, and I think empire cafe uses Katz, Inversion on Montrose does (not sure if true for the espresso).

I sold an espresso machine to someone that buys their coffee from Katz's. When I delivered the machine I demo'd it using some of my home roasted mongrel blend (small quantities of left over green beans tossed together & roasted to Full City that always seems to be better than my more carefully crafted blends). She wanted to contract with me to supply more of it in place of Katz coffee. This is not putting Katz product down - I only ried it that one time & I have no idea how old they were.

I can tell you from expierence that Katz coffee has decent fair trade coffee etc but his espresso is not good at all nor is his service. He is a small time roaster that has worked for many different coffee co's. I have worked in a place that used his coffee and my personal opinion is that the beans in the bag dont always match the sticker if you know what i mean, however he is cheap so that helps...if price is your issue
