Before I purchased a machine I used google to check out all of the local places in the Sacramento CA area that roasted their own beans. I was less than impressed with most of them- one of the places with the biggest claims of perfection had the worst espresso shots I have ever had...
Then I saw the website for Vaneli's. They do not have their own local shops, but do supply beans to some shops in the area. What I noticed about them was that they had equipment in stock for me to check out. The shop was fairly well stocked but they tend to cater to commercial shops with their equipment- they do carry La Scala and another Italian line of manual machines (I forget the names).
I went into their shop and was immediately met by both the owner and the roaster. They were both great and invited me in for coffee. They spent well over an hour showing and recommending equipment. Then they served me up one of the best cups of coffee I had ever had.
I've returned several times since that initial visit. I was shown their roasting room and given advice for home roasting. They've also brewed me up a fresh cup of coffee each visit using different beans so I could try out their lineup.
I have purchased whole beans, equipment, and even green beans from them.
They told me that their Cremosa espresso roast is their top seller. I picked blindly at the time and purchased the Espresso Forte. I loved it.
On my last trip I bought several pounds of green beans recommended by the roaster. I roasted them and allowed them to rest while I tried roasted beans from yet another local roaster.
Tonight I filled my grinder with the beans I had roasted from Vaneli's. I was amazed. My first shot was a 50 second shot due to too fine a setting on my grinder. I tasted it with the intention of dumping it- it was great. I adjusted my grinder and pulled the best shot to come out of my machine. I don't usually drink espresso straight but I sucked down that double shot and wanted more. If it wasn't for the late hour I would have had several more- but I need to sleep at some point.
I can only give Vaneli's my highest recommendation at this point. They are the best beans I have put through my machine. The folks at the company itself have also been great with each visit. They will continue to get my business.
Please try them out and let me know what you think. You can order through their website (vanelis.com) but I find the site doesn't work all that well sometimes.
