I got Gimme Coffee's french roast espresso blend which was pretty darn good. The cafe was very nice, with about 4 tables fit for 4 people and a a few chairs for singles. They ONLY pull triple ristrettos, and the one I had was excellent. I would of rather had a double espresso, but seeing they ONLY pull triple ristrettos...... The place is 4 blocks from the 2nd stop on the L train, so from 14th street in manhattan its about 5 minutes. Each triple ristretto was IIRC ~$1.80.
Their coffee is roasted fresh upstate and sent twice a week to the Brooklyn spot. They seem to run out of coffee pretty quick, because they did not have their acclaimed "Leftist" blend.
I enjoyed it very much and will definetly go back for their Leftist blend.

I had the best cup of coffee IN MY LIFE from their KENYA AA blend. I had it grinded there (French Press) and even the next day, the blend was tasteing so fresh. The cup of coffe I had was so good that I don't know if I'll ever experience another cup so good.
TRY THE KENYA AA blend. purely amazing.
And I perfer their French Roast blend over the Leftists for espresso

I can't stress enough how unbelievable Gimme Coffee is. Its nothing short of amazing what they have done with coffee. I drank the best latte in my life and it seems EVERY latte is the best in my life. A bit expensive for a small, $3.50, but compared to starbucks its about normal. SHots are $1.85, so thats not *too* bad. Of course, who cares about price when the results are so great.
The reason I'm posting is so this thread kinda stays on top. I won't do this tactic again, but I just can't stress enough how good this coffee is.

I have to chime in here to assert that Gimme Coffee is the first satisfying espresso I have had outside of Italy -- but I live in New York City, so I don't get a lot of exposure to good cafes.
I lived in Italy for one year and it was a revelation, when I came back (1996) I searched in vain for something that compared to what I tasted daily (several times a day!) in Italy. This is New York, we are so international -- how could we not have good espresso? I tried every place I saw recommended anywhere and became convinced I could trust noone's opinion. Until I tried Gimme Coffee last year. Thank God! I tell everyone to go there to taste a real espresso, because I have been persuaded after years of following "best coffee" reviews that there are very few New Yorkers that have ever tasted a decent espresso. People rave about a thing called the Mud Truck here -- if there was ever truth in a name...
The attached picture is poor because it was taken with the cell phone -- but most NY'ers I know have never even seen the lovely art of etching on their espresso...

Yes, Gimme is the absolute best in the city. It is probably the best coffee east of Seattle. 9th Street Espresso, on the corner of Ave. C and 9th St in Manhattan is also good. I have heard all kinds of rave reviews of Oslo, on Roebling St. in Williamsburg. Someone told me it had been selected as one of the best coffees in the city in one of the NYC papers. I was walking by this morning, and decided to give it a try.
It looked promising when I walked in: there were a lot of nice looking wooden tables and chairs around, and, even better, a large roaster at the back. The small selection of baked goods looked good, too. I ordered a macchiato, since I thought that would be a good choice for someone who likes Gimme-caliber espresso, but with milk in it. They served it in a nice medium-weight ceramic demi-tasse cup on a matching saucer with a demi-tasse spoon, which was nice. There was on the surface what appeared to be an attempt at latte art, but it may have just been a happy accident. I brought it over to the table (with a carrot mango coconut muffin), and sat down to enjoy both.
What a disappointment. The macchiato was lukewarm and sour tasting, and the muffin was flavorless and sawdusty. No more than a minute had passed between being served the macchiato and tasting it; either the cup was not heated, or they're not keeping the portafilters in the groupheads between shots (hence the sour taste), or they're using only the single-shot basket and pouring inadequately textured milk on top of a very small shot. The color was very light, and there appeared to be little crema. All in all a less than middling product.
Needless to say, I left in a hurry and headed over to Gimme on Lorimer St where I had two very delicious cappuccinos complete with beautiful rosettae and service with a smile. And one of them was free because I had my "buy 9, get the 10th free" drink card. And the macchiato I had after dinner this evening, prepared on my Isomac, was far superior--sweeter, and certainly warmer--to the one I had this morning at Oslo.
