Got to check out Floreffe. It's a belgian brewery with 4 types of beer: Floreffe Blonde (blond beer, creamy and dreamy! 6.3%) Floreffe Double (Brown and dangerous! 6.3%) Floreffe Triple (Blond beer with a kick! 7.5%) Floreffe Meilleure (My favorite!!! hazy brown goodness!! 8%)
There's Witkap Pater Stimulo. Pretty rare.
All Abbey beers are so gooood!
Also, anything from Unibroue. Local heroes! Even if they sold out to the Bigger Sleaman....
We had the annual Mondial de la Biere in Montreal two weekends ago and I got to taste a beer called Newton. It's a light white beer (3.5%) with a nice apple taste!
There'a few nice micro-breweries around town and Dieu du Ciel is certainly one of the finest and creative! They had a beer made with coffee!!! Can't remember the name but that was 3 years ago. Last year they had a gound pepper beer.
There's one from Germany that tastes like bacon. Honest to God!
Malachi, if you like Unibroue's 2004, go get the 2005. It's even better IMHO.

Sunday, I brewed my "soon to be famous" Nez Perce Pale Ale. It is a hoppy beast (66+ IBUs)...and the starting gravity was 1.075 (which will probably result in an alcohol content of 7.5-8%). I guess I am nudging into "Imperial IPA" territory...but I don't brew for style, I brew for taste. I use Warrior, Centennial and Amarillo hops during the boil, and dry hop with Amarillo, Centennial, and Columbus. It is happily bubbling away in the other room....can't wait to drink it in about 4 weeks! :)

Ah, to find a pub anywhere in Vancouver to compare to the common places in Belgium - menus of literally hundreds of beers, many great ones. One day...
I used to be a huge Big Rock fan (out of Alberta) but have recently moved over to Nelson Brewing beers. My favourite is the After Dark but I'm having trouble finding it now. The Faceplant winter ale is spectacular as well.
And not to forget the many microbrew pubs in the area - best recent find is in Victoria, just off wharf st. in an old heritage building. Can't remember the name but I'll check when I'm there this week. Great traditional beers served properly slightly chilled.

Yeah, Kirin's a slightly better beer, all things considered. But when I was really young (like 8), I went to a very nice Japanese restaurant with my family. My dad ordered a Sapporo, and I was enraptured by that big, giant, beautiful can. When I started drinking, one of the first things I did was buy a can of Sapporo. It's a very good beer, but my love of it is as much sentimental as anything.

Usually, it's Newcastle or an occasional Anchor Steam.
A local brewery's seasonal favorite is Lagunitas Hairy Eyeball Ale, if you can find it.
I was in the south of England recently near the Badger Brewery. Badger Best is their premium English ale - like Newcastle, but creamier. Ahhhh... that was civilized.

Hey Steve....I picked up some of the Leffe Abbey Ale this afternoon....sipping on one right now. Damn....this is one fine beer. I love Belgium ale so this is right up my alley. A little bit on the pricey side @ $8.99 a six pack....but well worth it. Not too many places carry it around here...luckily one of the local beverage stores had it. I know this is a little outdated, but I remembered you mentioning this beer, so I've been keeping my eyes open for it....anyways thanks for making me aware of this fine ale.

I'm a fan of Unibroue. Just bought a bottle of Maudite, though I am fond of nearly every bottle in their catalogue. I was disappointed with Edition 2004, so as per above, I will try 2005. A lot of Belgian abbaye-type beers are awesome... hard to go wrong really: Duvel, Abbaye des Rocs...
Other than that, I love the beers coming out of Phillips in Victoria, BC... they do an espresso stout with 2% Jazz espresso (my favorite cafe), though it is more of a porter if you ask me. Spinnaker's brewpub in Victoria also puts out some excellent bottle-conditioned ales.
