Ok, so I admit, this situation is kinda helpless, but I figured I could throw it out and see what creative ideas I get from all these intelligent coffee-geekers. Our school is having a fundraiser this month and is offering a "coffee house" as part of it. I would love to help out, but I don't know what to do. You see, their idea of "coffee" for a larger crowd (maybe 100 people max, but not all at one time) is to get those big cylinder perculators and put some Folgers, or even worse: Surefine coffee in it! Then for desserts they are planning to sell banket, a dutch treat filled with almond paste, that is quite good (but really fatty), but that is all they are selling. I'm hoping to bring some more classy desserts (tiramisu, biscotti etc.), and hopefully some tablecloths and such to add a bit, but I don't know what to do about the coffee! I've called some coffee retailers around the area to see if they rent any equipment, but none really do. I'm hoping I can at least borrow a good Bunn brewer. Any ideas? Also, what kind of coffee would you use to please a wide crowd, especially if most of the people around here hate their coffee dark?

As much as it pains me to say it... if most people aren't going to fully appreciate the good coffee, it's best to have other alternatives for them. Even without the use of an espresso machine, you can get some hot chocolate powder, mix it in some coffee, throw some whipped cream on top and call it a "mocha". And for those folks who actually do appreciate the finer things in life... make some good stuff. No matter what kind of drinks you're serving though, it's the atmosphere that will make the difference. In grade 12 my grad class organized a christmas party with a theme of "Christmas in Paris 1940's style". We found a swing dance teacher who was willing to give a few basic lessons, the woodworking class made little "Cafe's" to sell drinks and treats, and the art class made the Eiffel Tower (just a little creativity, some cardboard, paint and glitter). We rented street lamps and borrowed a slew of lights. Worked out well in the end... but I sure didn't drink any coffee. :)
