Finally my lovely wife scored me a Nintendo Wii. Needless to say I love the thing.
Anyways right now I'm playing Mario Kart Wii and The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. Both excellent titles. Since Mario Kart (MK) uses online play between friends I thought I'd ask if any of my coffee friends here have Wii's (I know you do Mark) and wanted to exchange MK friend codes so we could match up online.
My information is:
Wii Number: 3065-4519-8777-9227
Mario Kart Friend Code: 4296-3537-7188
Nickname: Tim Eggers
Ok if you guys want to exchange codes please post here and I'll add you. Hope to see you online!

your wii number is located in the message board area. from the home menu screen (the initial screen at startup, with all the channels), click on the letter in the bottom right corner. then click the "create message" button (left side). then click "address book" on the right side. you should then see your wii console number.
games also have separate friend codes. in mario kart, choose nintendo wfc and... forgive the lack of specifics, but i'm working from a vague memory... follow the menus until you see "friend" as one of the options. if you choose that button, your mario kart friend code will be listed.
there are severak titles featuring online play. mario strikers charged (soccer) was the first. more recently, super smash bros. brawl and mario kart have been added. there is also online play for EA sports games.

A little more information on number exchanges:
Wii console numbers can be exchanged between friends to allow for data/message transmissions between users (personal messages, invites to swap game specific friend codes etc). This allows the Wii's to communicate regardless of game being played.
Friend Codes are game specific and will allow to users (or more) to form a network for playing. Basically you exchange the codes, register them into your Wii then the users can meet up online in the non-anonymous mode of the worldwide play.
To find/register Wii numbers (to clarify melvy's response, thanks buddy):
Boot Wii, click on Wii Message Board icon (lower right hand corner of main channel page).
Click on Create Message icon (the little paper an pen bottom left of corner, second icon in from screen edge).
Click on address book, here you will see your console number (give this to your friends)
To register friends to your Wii:
From the page you see your console's number (directions above), click on the Register button (bottom right).
To register your friend's Wii select the Wii option. Note the other button is for other devices (duh).
Click on Wii, then click on the box that comes up (Add Wii Number)
Input the number the click OK, follow onscreen prompt for nickname (this is the name that will appear in your Address Book)
To exchange Friend Codes for Mario Kart Wii (please note this is game specific, so check the manual for other games):
Boot Wii put Mario Kart Wii game into disc slot and start game
Select the license you wish to use online (license is your save file)
Select one-player WFC option and connect to Nintendo WFC (Wi-Fi Connection Service)
Select Friends button on bottom
Now you should see your Friend Code by your Mii at the bottom of the screen
Note this is also the screen you can use to register friend codes that your friends give to you, to do that:
Select Register a Friend on the bottom
Input their code
Select OK
That's it once both friends exchange and register each other's codes they will be able to meet online and interact. MK has many slick online features with regards to friends (for example we could message and see if each other is online etc).
Also I highly recommend the Mario Kart Channel download. It’s free and Nintendo is starting to sponsor free online MK tournaments. You see how you rank regionally, worldwide and best of all against your friends!
Yes Nintendo's online is not as elaborate as say Microsoft's or even Sony's. This is a pretty hot topic on some of the game boards I frequent, but its assumed Nintendo wants to preserve its family image and give parents a lot of control over the people their kids interact with. I agree a more streamlined approach would be great, but that's just asking for the kids to meet the nastiness out there. Oh well...
On my DS for example I've seen some rather raunchy user names, it’s not common, but can happen. I can see Nintendo's point of view on this even though I do wish for other options as an "adult" player.
