When a newbie, i.e., someone who has a joined date that is real recent and less than say 5 posts asks a question and instead of answering it, someone just posts a URL. While URL's are good to supplement an answer, they are not an answer, and I see it happening all the time. I wonder how many people feel that is rude and don't come back?
I guess I've worked with too many new members to games and other forums I have dealt with over my 50+ years and feel a little politeness goes a long long way in making someone feel at home.

i'm sure you were talking about me.
i was tired and that HB roaster thread was what was on my mind when i read the post. not very personable, i agree, but i felt it would still be helpful. otherwise i guess i coulda just left the thread alone and let him feel possibly ignored.
tough to always be "on". some people like to converse more than others for whatever reason. sorry.

I hear ya! However, I don't think this is an issue of newbies or veterans or anyone in between. Being friendly and polite is a good way to act whether it's their first post or 10000th post. Some cases strictly a link is valid, but I think it's specific; if people are looking for a specific link, sure just post it. But if someone asks a question, simply posting a link as the answer is a little impersonal. I don't think it's intentionally trying to be rude, it's just not the friendly way of answering. And I can see how one would find it rude. But ultimately agreed; links are good resources to ADD to your post.

Nah man, not at all. It's easy enuf to add a few extra words to let them know why you're providing the link. If not for politeness, then for clarity. And heck, don't think of it as being "on"; be friendly for the sake of being friendly :) its amazing what passing on a kind word will do.
I really wish I'd been more friendly over the years here. Too many times I wasn't welcoming, or argued in an unkind manner. I really regret those times. Not good to those my posts were directed and certainly not good for the CG culture.
Nice thread Cerri, always good to have a reminder to act appropriately.
Agreed. Linksharing is one of the more common interactions on the internet these days, for everything from cool stuff to helpful articles, and much of what could be said here has been said elsewhere. How one reacts to a link as opposed to a written answer has as much to do with one's perspective as it does the content of the link. Links are, in my mind, a totally valid, but different, form of social response. Sortof the shorthand of the internet.
My pet peeve is when a newbie quotes an entire previous post, and then makes some inane comment, hoping that they sound clever, when, in fact, they only end up looking like a moron.

This beats the now famous (or infamous) and all too common "did you try searching Google?" response by a mile - why people bother to even type that is beyond me - polite words are nice but apt information is nice too Frank, and you did help.
I chew coffee beans with my teeth while gargling with 195 F water to enjoy coffee. What is this "coffee brewing" device you speak of?
