I have to thank Michael 'Bitches_Brew' for what I think is the greatest thread of all time here.
Keeping this thread alive and well, fixing old broken links (all contributors should check their old links),
ever expanding my awareness and taste in music. Thanks for a great contribution.

I know this thread has been mostly about Jazz, but always looking to expand my knowledge and enjoyment of music, in the last few years I have come to LOVE great OPERA!  I'm just a beginner here, and no, it's not about the fat lady singing; she's a beautiful Diva.

I struggled to find good bite size Opera nuggets on Youtube. I stumbled on this La Traviata performance. It's modern in stage & choreography, a bit peculiar, but true to the music and well done.

Some highlight bits:

While I'm waving the Opera Banner here,,,,

Rolando Villazon and Anna Netrebko, who's talent and chemistry worked so well in the above La Traviata, also carried the show in a Theatrical/Movie of Puccini's La Boheme:

EDIT: youtube removed link (as expected...

So here is the beautiful

Anna Netrebko - Puccini - La Bohème Quando m'en vo' soletta

Another good 'beginner' Opera.

I don't know how long this will be around or how Youtube gets away with it. I suppose until someone claims copyright infringement.  I figure it's all good to spread awareness. If you see it and enjoy it, just order the DVD.

Wow, I like opera, but for me it usually boils down to rock and roll, blues, jazz. Chilling with a coffee and listening to tube monoblocks.

Right now I could really go for Littlefeat, Waiting for Columbus - a great live rock album.

The vinyl has much more liquidity and flow than CD.

Aloha,

James

thanks for the kind words (and contribution) frost.:)

this one is long one, but i feel it's a good example of his constant experimentation with different timing. please check out the interview after the first song explaining some the different time signatures he likes to use and why he uses them. he was a true pioneer of jazz

tomorrow would have been his birthday, but he passed away today. :( R.I.P. dave..........

We have lost a great with Dave Brubeck. Sorry to hear that.

I went to the Monterey Jazz Festival in 2011 and heard alot of great music. The one performance that most rings my memory was a brief appearance by Bucky Pizzarelli.  He did a few solos with his son's band and the entire arena quickly went silent, listening in amazement. A man who is one with his instrument; in the zone.

He's getting up there and I fear won't be with us too much longer.

Bucky Pizzarelli

Song of the Volga Boatmen made my hand-ground, hand-pulled El Competidor with its long aftertaste just that much more enjoyable.

Yes.
