Hey all,
I was at work the other day behind the counter, when I had a customer come in and try to stump me with his specialty drink knowledge. He wanted to know if I knew what a Crowbar was, what a Vanilla Trainwreck was, a Voltaire, a Shot in the Dark, etc... and on down the line. I knew them all, up until he asked if I could make a "Rocky Road". That's the name, and I had no idea what it was...any pointers? I said if he described it for me, and I'd make it for him, and he refused, so I had a feeling he was just trying to trip me up.
He then asked if we had "B52", which he said was a flavored syrup used in drinks. Can anyone tell me about that one?
I hate not knowing things when it comes to my work, and worse yet I hate it when I look like I don't know what I'm doing in front of the espresso machine. Oi.. let me know if this guy was just pulling my chain.

Sorry I can't help you on the drink recipes; I usually go to a cafe to have coffee in some form or another. I would suggest that customers like that be directed to the Ben & Jerry's freezer at the supermarket. If the flavor they want isn't there; I'm sure either Ben or Jerry will be happy to invent it for them.

The only one that I can help you with is the B-52. B-52 is a flavoring syrup that is meant to taste like the alcoholic drink that is made with Kahlua. And this guy who quizzed you was either a fellow barista or just a loser who got bored of quizzing the guy at the record store about obscure music from the '80s that no one has ever heard of so he decided to go to the cafe and quiz the barista working about obscure drinks that no one has ever heard of.

i wouldn't assume there is a "standard" drink called a rocky road. he probably saw it at some random cafe that specializes in ultrasweet non-coffee drink "coffees". i'm sure at cafes across the country, there are at least a few that have something called a "rocky road" or "rocky road mocha", but i doubt they're all the exact same thing using the same ingredients. case in point, i think rocky road is traditionally made with almonds, not hazelnuts.

Thanks for the responses! :) I kinda thought Rocky Road was either something he fabricated or a specific drink at a specific coffee place he went to. Every place seems to have something all the other shops don't have in terms of their drink menu. It's what makes them unique.
