I have been yearning for a vietnamese coffee press (aka coffee fin) so that I can make my own vietnamese iced coffees rather than rely on local restaurants. Does anybody know of a distributor/restaurant supply store/internet site where I can purchase these?
I purchased mine in an oriental market in "Chinatown" in Houston TX for $4.00 each.
I would suggest that you should be able to find an oriental market somewhere in Seattle that would have them right next to the coffee, or with the pots, pans, and other sundry items.
A friend of mine who's parents own an oriental restaurant suggests that the recipe is two tablespoons of Cafe du Mond coffee (which you should find in the same market) or other chicory coffee blend, and two tablespoons sweet condensed milk.
I just picked up two for myself. Got them at an oriental market in town. Real cheap. Four bucks each. I'm not too hip on the canned coffee that they recommended. I opened the can to yucky old stale coffee. With chickory, even. bleh. I recommend a slightly course grind of something fresh. About 2-3 heaping teaspoons, coat the bottom of your cup with sweetened condensed milk. Man that is so good. I feel your yearning. I was jonesing pretty hard too before I found mine. I also recommend adding ice and a bit of half and half. I'm sure that is "westernizing" the drink, but it's still good.
I picked up one last year in a Vietnamese Grocery store in North Toronto a few miles from where I live, cost on the tag is $4.49 Can, about $2.70 US!! {:-)
Thanks everybody for your suggestions. The last post gave me new search terms for Google (single cup metal coffee filter press), and I eventually found a kitchen internet-order supplier that sells these presses (although for $11, so I'll try local Asian markets first). Contact me if you'd like the URL of this supplier (don't want to post it here, in case that violates the no advertising rule).
does anyone know where to get a NICE vietnamese coffee maker? i have the standard cheapo one, but i can tell it's not going to last. 5 bucks isn't a huge price to pay for a replacement, but if possible i'd like one with better craftsmanship.
I was curious about how to make Vietnamese coffee, and in fact, that is how I found this site ... so I signed up. ;) Love it. I should look at getting one of these. :D
I got mine in Houston years ago too, cant remember what I paid but they were inexpensive. When it was served to me at Van Loc restaurant in vina-town it came with the sweetened condensed milk already in the cup and a large glass of ice to pour over it. I tried making them with a pulverized puerto rican coffee that someone had given me and then settled on slightly courser than espresso grind. A fine grind will work but takes forever to drip through.

ozarktroubum, I was wondering if you knew anything about the expresso machines called LaSpazzialle? You seem to know a lot about these things, I have gathered from reading all of your posts. Also about the machine you own, could you read the posts about that because I have a very important question I had put on there. As far as vietnamese coffe goes. I love it. I have it imported directly. I have a few people that I know that are in the coffee distribution business that are more than willing to get it for me at a great price. I ended up buying a speciality maker for it since I love it so much. It was a little expensive though. Set me back about 2500. It is really worth it if you like the coffee though.
