My husband and I just returned from Amsterdam where we lived off of their coffee. Does anyone know how they do it? We think they make an espresso and add a little extra water, but wanted to see if anyone knows for sure. We bought a Nespresso Le Cube the day after we got home, but decided to return it after looking at the prices of the capsules and realizing it would turn into a very expensive habit!

I went to europe on vacation last month (one stop was Amsterdam), and as a result I ended up on coffee geek absorbing as much information as possible  [trying to re-create my cafe experiences]!

I'm pretty sure what I got from a lot of places was something like an Americano with some milk or condensed milk, along with the little cookie!  But you are asking about the black coffee, so I dunno. =)

I've not reproduced exactly what I was getting over there, however I think as a result of coming here I'm making, and learning how to make things that are as good or better.  The aeropress has been my friend lately, and I hope to start playing with an espresso machine sometime soon.

... i'm curious to see what others post --

Yes! That's the coffee! I love it, and those little cookies especially (that I looked for at every market and could not find!). The condensed milk took a little getting used to at first, but we got into it really quick :) We were thinking it was a "short" Americano, its just such smooth coffee they make. We bought some espresso beans so we are going to experiment with our Aeropress. Hopefully someone comes through with some tips or good techniques....

Dutch black coffee is just drip coffee made with a vienna roasted blend of mostly robusta beans. The cheapest of the cheapest and often awfully bitter. But for some reason no one seems interested in trying something else and now they call it 'culture' :).

It is called 'snel filter maling' It is all drip coffee. Pre Grind coffee with lots of cheap robusta.
Is dutch culture to love this coffee (i hated it but it grows on you but when you taste real espresso there is no way back)
