I found in an old newspaper (Hawaiian Gazette, 1896) the following quite interesting recipe. The author was a Mrs. Ignacio Sepulveda. Here we go:
"For making black coffee, roast 1 pound of coffee until the inside of the grain is brown, then put a small teaspoonful of butter, same of sugar, and mix well together; then sprinkle a little brandy over it and cover with a thick cloth. Leave it for about an hour, then grind (the beans). Boil one quart of water; when boiling, put in coffee and remove from the fire immediately. Let it stand a few hours and strain it through a flannel bag, and keep it in a stone jar until required for use; then heat whatever quantity is required."
Pound of coffee. Roaster. Grinder. Quart of water. Butter. Sugar. Flannel bag. Stone jar. Thick cloth. Brandy.
Let me know how it turned out - didn't get around to try it myself yet.
