Ever since seeing Dismas Smith build his "Latin Love" drink at the SCAA Barista World Championships, I've been semi-obsessed with crafting a similar drink, but one using more home-grown materials. I also wanted to create a "lite" version as well as a full (sugar-sweet) version.
Here's the drink I'm happy with, after much experimentation.
CoolEspressia Regular - makes 3 small servings, or one big "American Style" serving.
Freshly brewed 2 oz double (or 1.5 oz double ristretto, no less volume)
3 heaping tsp of Ghirardelli's sweetened chocolate powder, or equiv (your choice of a sweetened chocolate)
2 oz cream - not whipped cream, but the cream you buy to make whipped cream. I use the 33%MF stuff.
Pocky sticks for garnish (I find the strawberry one goes great, but white chocolate is good too - Pocky is a Japanese treat, but it's sold everywhere).
1.5 cups of ice
whipped cream
chocolate or cinnamon sprinkles (powder, grated, whatever).
Instructions: Brew a 2 ounce double (or 1.5oz ristretto, but no less) into a 3-4 oz stainless steel pitcher (the kind used for espresso) or something similar. Take your 3 heaping teaspoons of Ghirardelli's sweetened chocolate powder, mix in with the espresso in the tiny pitcher, stir so it completely melts (substitute your choice of sweetened chocolate to taste). Make sure the chocolate completely melts.
Take a martini shaker, add ice, pour chocolate / espresso into it, add 2oz cream. Shake like a banshee for 30 seconds. REALLY shake it well.
Get suitable glasses (I have these cool shot glasses that look like miniature white wine glasses that suit it perfectly), and pour out, dividing by 3 (you should get roughly 1.75 to 2oz per serving, it produces about 6+ oz of beverage). Top with whipped cream, add pocky stick and sprinkle chocolate and serve.
I can build this drink inside 75 seconds, I've gotten my timing down pretty good :)
CoolEspressia Light
Same as above, but substitute for the sweetened chocolate. I use Hershey's unsweetened cocoa powder. Add your choice of artificial sweetener. I use a product only available in Canada, sodium cyclamate, which has no aftertaste. I still use the cream (both whipped and liquid; hey, my dieting philosophy is the Zone diets - this kind of milk fat is good for you - carbs are bad! :))
You can also serve up a "big gulp" version of it for yourself - here's all the servings in a champagne flute. (note, how cool is the new lighting I have for taking photographs? This picture is completely unretouched, except for sizing!)

Uh... I think banshees scream. They don't shake. Shake it, baby, shake it. Maybe it should be "shake like Austin Powers is having a spaz attack". Aren't they really ugly too? That's banshees, ... wait, austin powers too. I refuse to be ugly for this drink. =)
Yes, the drink is fantastic. I blame the drink on my enthusastic weight gain this summer. <glare> A heart attack in a glass. That would have been a more befitting name.
Pocky sticks are them dipped pretzel sticks. I think Mango is pretty good, although the Chocolate mousse one goes well with this drink. Okay, I admit it. I'm a chocoholic. I love chocolate. I sleepwalk to eat chocolate in different parts of the house. The dipped quality of these edible stir sticks means that it's a little more "moisture resistant" than a regular pretzel stick. Don't forget to eat the pocky stick! There are starving children in <name of a developing country> who would love that pocky stick!
Note: Cleaning the glass is much better sooner rather than later. Two days later, the chocolate and coffee residue is semi-baked onto the glass, which is a little too delicate for vigourous scrubbing. Did I mention that I am not a fan of stemware? I broke two martini glasses once by looking at them. Of course, later we discovered it had to do with the resonance of the music and the surface is was placed upon that caused the breakage frequency... but boy was I upset!
OT:Jeannete...You're funny!, I love it, No guff!! Banshees!!!!, I just found this ,had to post... (No one told me about her,her,..,the way she..) (Audio's terrible!) HeHe, click here Found this in the pages too!(OT) Bottom of page ,click on "Were here", Also "Screech", then click on the screech bottle, click hereCheers!
Jeanette - you & my husband!!! I buy treats to have with coffee in the evening. If my husband knows where they are, he will consume mass quantities until they exist no longer. But only in his sleep!!! I have hiding places around the house where I keep my stash.

Well Mark, I am impressed, just put together your concoction minus the whipped cream on top (will try that later)I imagine it would be a real hit after a dinner party, but any way it went down a treat at 2pm in my humble abode, in my wifes words (there goes the diet, but what a way to go) This one will go into the list of recipe favorites. And so easy to prepare. Well done. Santa.
