I usually make oatmeal with the typical oat and water recipe, then pour into a bowl and add milk and sugar. The other morning I decided to heat the milk instead of adding it cold. Used the Silvia steam wand and must have gone on autopilot and wound up with a pitcher of microfoam same as I use for cappuccino. Added it to the oatmeal but was disappointed with the results. The foam just stayed on top of the oatmeal and didn't mix well. The foamy mixture detracted from the oatmeal texture and mouthfeel. I probably won't try that again.
Does anyone have any success stories using the steam wand for any kind of non-coffee food or food preparation? Or flops like my oatmeal to be avoided?
I regularely use it to prepare hot chocolate. Just plunge in the tip far enough to not make foam, that should also work for your oatmeal. Also when the steam is really dry, I use short bursts into wine glasses to moisten them to get fine dust off. Of course heating water for broth or single cups of tea is standard. I never use boiler water for drinking.
Gaaaa!!!! I've actually seen someone do this! What I couldn't work out was wether the eggs or the coffees made after was more gag worthy. To top it off, he didn't flush the steam wand after using it!!!

I worked at a cafe where we had a dedicated steam wand for scrambled egg dishes and polenta. I don't think I'd choose to cook that way at home, though. Messy and bordering unsanitary. ;-)

So food prep with steam wand is like a talking dog. It would be amazing to find a dog that talked, but would you want to have a conversation with it?
What I had in mind for this thread was more along the lines of my failed oatmeal experience. Is there any kind of recipe, like soup or something, where you could add foamed milk to improve texture and/or taste?
