Subject: Call for Testers: New CoffeeGeek site improvements

We need people to help us test a new version of our WIPS software (the stuff that runs this website). We believe this new version will be a major speed improvement for the CoffeeGeek website, but we need help from about 20 or 30 people (or more) in testing various aspects of the site.

Before I spell out the detailed info, if you'd like to get involved, please do the following: surf the test site, but keep a Notepad (or another word or text editor) window open. If you run into problems, log the problem (describe it in Notepad), the error messages you may see, and just keep filling it up. At the end of the day, or the end of your test session, send your notes (cut and paste it) via email to support@coffeegeek.com

Okay, here's the details.

The test site is at

http://cg.webmotif.com

The database on that test site is a duplicate of the live site - if you enter anything, write new articles, reviews, etc, don't worry - IT WILL ALL BE DELETED. All that you type on the test site stays on the test site until the testing is over. Nothing you type on the test site will show up on the live site. Keep that in mind.

Things to test for:

  • Signup with a new account (you will have to use a valid email address, and not your current one used for your real membership)
  • profile changes
  • post product reviews
  • sign up for newsletters, etc
  • post comments on reviews, articles, etc
  • post forum topics, replies, edit your forum settings.
  • Moderators: delete posts, edit posts, move posts.
  • Anything not commonly accessed

Notes on Performance: (these apply to all test-sites)
---------------------

  • Many of the computations on the site are spread among the users browsing the site.  The more users that are accessing the site the less each user computes.  If there is one user browsing the site they are doing the maximum amount of work to generate the site. This is why it's really important for us to get 20 or more active users testing the site.

  • The WIPS cache for the site is virtually empty; just about everything that is cached has to be regenerated from scratch. Once this is done, you'll see the speed of the site dramatically improve.

  • Since the test site isn't being hit by users it's code and data are not in the computers memory cache.  This can have a large effect on performance.  You might notice the site needs to be warmed up before it gets going full speed.

Thanks everyone for helping with this. The test should go until this weekend, unless we turn up zero bugs :)
