Hi, Im looking for fair trade green beans in Australia and am not finding much. Does anyone know where I can get some? Is there others here who are concerned with this issue? I'd love to hear peoples opinion on this:) Thanks

If I were you I would go to the roasters and ask them where they get their beans from. remember Fairtrade is a brand which means you have to be certified to use the word (it also means loads of fairly traded coffee gets less support because there are only so many people Oxfam can help in the world) It is the only choice in the supermarkets as they will generally be buying from the cheapest vendor and should be forced to buy more responsibly. But if you want fresh coffee you can be just as helpful to the farmers and to your local economy by going to a roaster or coffee shop that has a good knowledge of their product and a policy of sustainability and fair trade if not the brand, you also might get a good range of flavours to choose from without liniting yourself to one region.

I have already spoken to many roasters and have found a roaster who has some types of coffee that fit the fair trade criteria although their not certified. I'm only really interested in knowing (as Philm said) that the roaster knows about where they aquired the coffee from and that it was bought at a fair price.

P.S. If anyone else is interested in finding fairly traded coffee you can contact oxfam or ozcoffee. also Tobys estate has a few types of un-certified fairly traded coffee beans.

Thanks for your additional information too.
More importantly, thanks for raising the subject. If people were aware of what was going on in the coffee trade, they may think twice about where and how they get their daily cup. I'm not about to stop drinking coffee because I can't get Fair Trade all the time, but I can make a difference by purchasing it when I can, and by making others aware of the impact that current trade practices have on developing nations.
