I've a friend in Adelaide who is getting a business plan together for a coffee stall, but is looking at the alternative of one of those 'burger van' carts (only much more stylish of course) that you tow to a site with your car, open the side and sell the same high quality coffee but with hopefully reduced rent and more flexibility.

I'm not too sure about the carts themselves, but I'd be getting your friend to choose a good roaster first up. They will provide him with tonnes of support. I remember that Rio roasted last year's world barista champ's beans, and have provided us with numerous good samples, but I don't know much about the Adelaide scene.

I like Rio beans too, Luca. Keep trying out the interesting SO stuff that Simply Coffee and the Central Markets have, but tend to end up back with Rio for the best blends. Unfortunately, they give the distinct impression that they are aiming at bigtime operations, and their equipment certainly is the upper end. You are right about roasters being helpful, though. I've spoken to a couple of more backstreet setups* with lots of useful stuff on equipment, strategies and finance. Actually hadn't occurred to me that it'd be a good place for cart info too. (Clearly I am not the brains behind this operation, just the coffee addict adviser.)
Thanks Paul - that'd be good.
Cheers - Keith
*Edit: that doesn't scan right. This friend of mine isn't planning some cheapo operation. Just that it's difficult to get Rio interested in startup stuff, whereas there are less well known/smaller roasters who are.

Just get a good handy man to make one. Dont go and buy a cart from a specialist. I know 3 guys that can put it together and they have never made a cart before. Its not a hard thing to make if you got the skills. If you buy a cart from a specialist that do carts it will triple the cost.
