Has anyone had any experience with this? Home Barista Institute

They are in Victoria St, West Melbourne and from their web blurb, they used to run the Knock Box Cafe in the city.

nice guys, came into my cafe this year. Friendly and really trying to make a difference. No idea on coffee standard or what they use. Regardless on how high their skills are, they are really making an effort in the right direction. The do have a passion for coffee. I'll check em out tomorrow.

Some of their courses are a little weird like how to become a successful cafe?
Thats something out of the ordinary and i believe you shouldnt teach if you are a cafe owner. It makes you a target. Are you a cafe or business management course?? it doesnt sit well with me.  Plus i would only take advise on the cafe industry from someone who has made millions and who owns several cafes. Sick to what you really know and thats the running of your current business.

So- they knock off the academy logo, plagarise the courses and set up without any RTO accreditation.....They are not able to deliver courses to provide participants with a recognised Aussie qualification.....

Everyone form an orderly queue at the door I say ;-)

Hmm.....sounds like it could be fun, Bill.

Let's catch up for a yarn when you're in town....I'm sure Jill would release me to do a special gig for the academy in the bush ;-)

They use both Ducale beans and their own house brand, which is roasted elsewhere. They tend to push barista skills as the most critical part of the coffee process, with less focus on fresh roast and machine tweaking.

My main issue with Ducale is there is no guarantee of freshness despite being roasted in Australia. They do not print a roast date on the bag and the suppliers are the department of blank looks.

The "Red" variety of Ducale is far better for espresso. I think they refer to the variety as "Furioso" or some such.

Not fresh for sure. Congo foods distributes their coffee and its old. The sample i got was was so bad and it was the furioso blend. Its pretty cheap coffee too. Its like $16 dollars a kg. No thanks. I would drink Vittoria any day over that.

Actually, that reminds me- that was the worst coffee I drank last year. I sampled two at a now defunct St Georges Rd location (ex competitor)....The espresso 70 ml in about 10 seconds with no cooling flush and stale as- from a dirty machine which sat idle all day......the latte- same base with a Mont Blanc style meringue of putrid scalded milk sludge on top....probably in my top three all time worst coffees....

Foul stuff.....good thing that the operator went broke!
