I am in the market for a new grinder as my Gaggia MM has recently broken. Looking at the various discussions on CG I notice that the Rancilio Rocky is much talked about in the US streams. It seems to be the standard. Am I wrong? I also see that I cannot but one in Brisbane stores (that I know of) but it is available by post from various sources at about the same price. It also seems pretty expensive to me. Question 1. Is it worth the extra money than buying something from an electrical store? Question 2. Do I want a doserless or a doser model and why? Question 3. Some sites are advertising Rocky and some Rocky 2. Are they the same? (Will Sylvester Stallone still win against the odds?)

Hey Peter, welcome to coffeegeek!
Grinders do seem expensive at first ... but rest assured, it's a very worthy investment.
Some answers ...
Yes. From electrical stores of places like myers, you'll get gaggia mm's and mdf's, a sunbeam emo480, or maybe a lux. If I had to, I'd probably get the lux or the sunbeam. But trusted sources tell me the rocky is so much better.
Personal preferrence. Consider your brewing habits - do you use different brewing methods throughout the week? (ie; espresso, plunger, drip etc), or just espresso all the time? I'd think that doserless would be the go, but that said, I like having a doser. It's a little bit tidier to me. Static can make little grinds fly everywhere out of the spout of a doserless, whereas static in a doser makes the coffee just stick to the walls of the doser.
