Could anyone suggest some shops where I might get a 58 mm tamper in Melbourne? I know there are online sellers (such as those supplying parts for coffee machines), but I like to see these things in person before buying if possible.

I can't help with Melbourne (I'm from NSW) but I can happily recommend Greg Pullman's tampers. http://all.at/coffeetampers Very prompt service. The tamper has a Jarrah handle and a stainless steel base. Nicely made. I very rarely purchase anything online but IMO this was worth the effort.

If you haven't bought any by March (or even if you have ;) check out the Celebrate the Bean festival in Melbourne on March 28th.
I'm pretty sure Dom from CoffeeParts.com will be there with his stainless steel tampers, and the other vendors should have their normal aluminium (and plastic) ones as well.
What you won't find is the sort of range that a US company like EspressoParts has. Having seen tampers treated like porn (ie: kept under the counter for people who ask for them) it's not really surprising.

Ahh my 2 cents.... I also bought one from Greg. I was also a bit nervous buying over the internet and not seeing the product first. But its just great - Improved my shots from the first time I used it. I have no hesitation in recommending his tampers. - Vicki
