I recently heard that there are 70 or so coffee roasters located in New Zealand. I am hoping to get some more information about this. Any will be great. Are they located more on the North or South Island? What sort of roast profiles and cup profiles are popular? Single origins or blends? Arabica or robusta? Anyone tried growing coffee in greenhouses there?
My main reason for asking these questions is would like to be doing some of those things. I lice in the us and am very interested in New Zealand and would like to explore it, eventually if possible I'd like to move there, open a roastire, try and grow some coffee myself, and roast and serve it up to people. Focusing on 100% Arabica single origin coffees. But I have only begun to research things so thats why i've posted here.
Thanks for reading, I sort of started to ramble, so please and thank you to anyone with some info.
hey tiger... there are over 140 roasters last i hear on rough stats. a few big players, and alot of smaller boutique roasteries.. some very cool ones.
with regards to growing coffee here, quite a few poeple grow indoor plants but nothing that i have heard of on a commercial nature. the climate doesnt really support it. and to grow them in a hot house, i doubt would prove very cost efficient at all. but would be keen to be proven wrong, as i have often thought about this as well.

I wouldn't consider commercially growing coffee in NZ. It's far too cold, you would need the country's biggest glasshouse to support just one cafe as the yeild is so small - around 1lb/year/tree. The cherries have to be picked by hand and the minimum wage is well over 3 cups rice/day.
Sorry to be such a downer, good luck if you're crazy enough to give it a go - you'll make some great friends there.
Yeah, I know exactly what it takes to grow coffee, i just haven't done it yet. I would never grow to supply a cafe, I would grow the coffee plant for fun and bonus time when I get a yield. Coffee plants are beautiful. Thanks for the info though.
