Living in Taiwan as I do, it's often difficult to find out where the newest coffee shops are. There are plenty of chainstore coffee shops, where the coffee tastes rather unexciting at the best. But I'd be looking for coffee shops that are non-chains and actually know what they are doing!

Thanks for the tips, I am going searching in a couple of weeks. I know the areas mentioned so it will give me a chance to try out some different types of coffee! I'll try and give some feedback...that's going to be one highly caffeinated trip! I just hope the stomach flu is gone by then!

My friend is going to Taiwan and has offered to pick me anything. Does anybody know where she can go to pick up and buy Simon Hsieh's Aroma Roast/4-Arts Zero Defect Coffees? I can't read Chinese so I'm having problems trying to determine that.
I've read about his coffee on barismo blog, but the international shipping charges was always just too much for me.
He is in vacation until Feb.16th (due to Chinese New Year), after that he should take roast order again. From his blog imho he is doing a lot of Coffee education, like seminars, cuppings etc... If your friend can call him directly, it will be certainly easier to find out how/where to buy his beans.

Thanks for the help! Although, from what another friend translated, I guess even in Taiwan you've got to pay shipping charges.
And, does anybody have any suggestions for syphon coffee in Taipei? I know that syphon is very popular in Taiwan, but I was wondering if one place stood out from the others. Its my theory that you can probably get better syphon coffee than syphon coffee at america's best coffee shops. When you look at youtube videos of american coffeeshops doing syphon, they seem off.
I guess I can look up the places that win Taiwanese coffee barista championships, a la Intellegentsia, but are those the places to go for syphon?

For Taichung, try Orsir. Orsir's barista won 2009 World Siphon Championship in Tokyo. The same barista won the 2010 Taiwan Barista Championship. The owner of Orsir is also CoE judge.
Simon Hsieh offers consumer class in siphon. You can find more information on his website. His book on coffee is also excellent. I tried to ask him tips on using the Mini 500, but he would not reveal any. Perhaps you have better luck.

My friend will be in Taipei, so a visit to Orsir in Taichung seems unlikely even though that sounds the more promising spot. I tried googling past Taiwanese syphon champions, but I guess that 2009 was their first competition.

Hello we are a couple currently living in Taiwan. We had the same problem when we arrived but to our good fortune we found an amazing cafe in Taichung City. The name is Tomar Cafe and it is located on Changping Road, 3 blocks west of Wenxin. The owner- Tomar, imports coffee from Ethiopia, the Galapagos Islands and several other South American and African countries. He does all of the roasting in shop and most of his coffee sells for approximately $20/ 150grams. Hope this helps!
