But I'd recommend waiting for a couple of weeks so you can check out the deals available at the Rocks Aroma Coffee Festival, July 11th. There are usually a 1/2 dozen companies selling espresso machines.

I might as well point out that you can buy it from Alan Frew (www.coffeeco.com.au - espresso section) and have it shipped up. It'll cost you a bit more, but he'll throw in a kilo of freshly roasted beans and, more importantly, he's a fantastic repair technician, so if anything goes wrong you'll get your machine back ASAP. Yes, I am biased - bought mine from him.
Cheers,
Luca
PS. It's true that silvia is a bit picky and it takes a lot of tweaking to get the best results out of her. I recently found out that the expobar office (heat exchanger and e-61 style group) is available for $1300 - about $700ish cheaper than similar machines ... might be worth a look.

Thanks, all, for the replies. I've just returned to Sydney, and am re-discovering what's around! This area of the CoffeeGeek forum is greatly helpful in learning about the coffee world in Australia, and Sydney.

Last Thursday eveningI discovered that the coffee shop on the ground floor of the Strand Arcade sells Rancilio machines and grinders. Most models seemed to be on display.

Good question. My Carezza is on a ship on its way here from the US along with the rest of my household contents. From my research so far, I haven't been able to find a stepdown transformer to handle the 1425W the Carezza uses, and although I'm sure there's one out there, what is probably the model below the transformer I'm looking for costs close to the $300 mark, so... I thought that I would just buy a new machine... and if buying a new machine, was thinking of going a little up from the Carezza. I was very happy with the Carezza, and still wonder if that's what I should buy again. I had wondered if the 3-way solenoid valve on the Gaggia Classic and the Rancilio Silvia would help speed up the time between shots, but wondered how important that was!
I have heard of the coffeesnobs co-op, thanks, and need to investigate more. I was using a hot air popcorn popper in the US, and am planning to begin with the hot air gun / dogbowl method of roasting here soon. When I get to doing that (probably sometime over the next few weeks) I'll be checking out the green bean options in more detail.

If you've got a decent grinder, and don't mind only doing a couple of milk based drinks in a row, then the Carezza is a great little machine. All you'll be getting with the Silvia is the 3-way and a better frothing wand & tip. Oh, and better internal components.
As for speeding up the time between shots... I doubt 5-10 seconds extra is going to make that much of a difference.
IMO the differences between the good single boilers are not that great, when they're compared to heat exchange machines. Or, for that matter, e61 based single boilers like the Isomac Zaffiro.
There are quite a few of us home roasting in Sydney. We're just not quite as regimented as the Melbourne folks.
