Subject: Fresh roasted beans in Ottawa?

Just saved up for a Rocky to match my Sylvia.  Currently saving up for a roaster while I figure out an argument to convince my wife that it's worth getting one.

In the meantime: where the heck can I find quality, truly fresh roasted whole coffee beans in Ottawa?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I visited Ottawa not too long ago, and there is a company called Espresso Uno, they had great espresso there, the best in the area i tried.  Hope that helps you out, best of luck.

Have you tried International Kafia Coffee?  They are on Boyd off Carling.  They roast on site and don't have beans older than 2 or 3 days.

There's also Francesco's on Winona Ave just off Richmond rd, near the MEC.

I haven't really bought anything there so I can't comment on how fresh the beans really are.

I talked to a friend last night.  He said you can also buy green beans from Kafia as well as home roasters.  I'll check this out next time I visit the store.  So far I have tried the Espresso blend and the Dark Decaf.  Both were fresh and tasty.

We sampled some of Francesco's espresso today at work.  We normally use Illy which is consistently a great coffee although it's quite possible a fresh roasted bean could be better.  We sampled their "gourmet" class Il Cremoso blend first.  It was good but left a strong aftertaste and just wasn't quite good enough to compete with Illy.  Next we sampled their fair trade/organic blend... do not buy this!!  I'm not really sure how to describe it.  It's not that it tasted bad.  It simply didn't have any taste at all.  None of the smack-you-in-the-face flavours you get with a good espresso.

So if you want to try their espresso the Il Cremoso should deliver a decent shot.  Just stay away from the organic/fair trade one (forget the fancy name for it).

Clark: I believe I met you one day at the bagel shop a week or two back...

I can honestly say that I wasn't all that impressed with both of the "regular" coffees (non-espresso blends) that I tried from Francesco's. I tried their Costa Rican, which tasted sour? to me. I also
tried their Mokha Savoia which, not terrible, was nothing to write home about either.

In the same time frame, I have picked up a popcorn popper and have been experimenting with roasting at home and have found that my coffee is much better than either one I tried from Francesco's....not to mention costing half the price...

Fire #1! (I don't know if any of these places are actually good, per se...)

International Kafia coffees can also be purchased at the Rideau Bakery, according to this link.  They're kosher!

Espresso Uno, which seems to be a coffee-catering service, can be found here.

I recommend CG's in the Ottawa area check out Kafia on Boyd Avenue.  By going to the source you know you are going to be buying fresh.  Their price, $6.99 - $7.99 a pound can't be beat.  I'm interested to hear a few other reviews of their beans as I'm new to this coffee cupping thing.

Just an update.  If you roast Kafia has green beans for $6 a pound.

I can recommend The Tea Party, on York St. in the market.  They roast on premises...I've been buying there for years.  I have tried Francesco's a few times, but have not been impressed.
