I'm looking for some shops in the Montreal area that sell high end espresso machines...giotto,pasquini, etc...I'm only an hour or so drive away from Montreal, and I'd like to get to see some of these machines in person, before I decide on my next purchase.

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,

It's a good idea, as you say, to see the beasts in person, if you can. I even made a detour in Paris to see a Reneka Techno in action ;-)

You could have a look at the yellow pages. It's always a start.

Like I said in another thread, your best bet to find what you are looking for is to go near the intersection of "Boulevard St-Laurent" and "Boulevard Jean-Talon". This is in the Little-Italy. I'm sure there's other places, but it's a good place to go for someone visiting Montreal. Also, there's the "Marche Jean-Talon" which sells lots of goodies, especially "La fromagerie Hamel" if you like cheese like I do :-)

I've seen the Giotto at Cafe-Union and Feama Canada. I don't remember if it was at Cafe Creme, but I remember going into another store on Jean-Talon that had Elektras (Micro Casa) and Pavonis (both lever machines and some pump machines). During my short trip there, I didn't see the Livia.

Have you looked in Vermont?

Hope this helps.

Carl

Hey Carl,

Thanks for the great info...sounds like a great day trip to me, even if I don't find what i'm looking for...I don't get to Montreal as often as I should...usually it's for concerts or hockey games, so I never get to check out other parts of the city...I'm really looking forward to checking out little Italy.

Thanks again,
Chris

Hey Philippe. When I was in la belle ville this past spring, I tried to find Cafe Union but had no luck. The company's name comes up often though, and I wanted to check them out. What's their showroom like? Are they "good guys" to deal with? I haven't heard much one way or the other.  I also suspect they are mainly commercial machines, and consumer machines are a side-step (unlike your business where you cater to us CoffeeGeeks almost exclusively)... is that your impression of them as well?

Also, have you had a chance to play around with the Faema Family machine (grinder and brewer)? If so, how is it? Is it something you'd eventually carry? I have a moratorium on espresso machines sent in for detailed review right now, but I think I'd lift it for a Faema Family submission, mainly because most experienced coffee hounds know or have heard of this machine, but almost no one actually "knows" anything about it.

One other question - I'll be back in Montreal for an overnighter between Christmas and New Years - my usual haunts, as I mentioned on the phone to you, are rue St. Denis, which a coffee hound may naturally gravitate to. But are the cafes in town that will pull the proverbial "god shot" that I must see next time around?

hey, to steal from a very famous movie, "we'll always have Montreal..." :)

I was thinking about Quebec's slogan, la belle province, when I wrote that. Montreal is one of the most amazing cities this side of the Atlantic, at least to me. :)

Hi Mark!

Café Union have a nice showroom with many different espresso machines (Rancilio of course, Giotto, Solis, Gaggia, etc). They are specialized in Professional machines for restaurants and they are coffee supplier (roasters) as well...unfortunatly, the coffee is not even in quality... (sometimes it is good, sometimes pretty bad!. They are pretty nice people!

Regarding Faema equipment, i cant help you since i never had the chance to work with this equipment! It is mainly a professional brand.

Regarding good espresso shots in Montreal, you defenitly must go in the little Italy. Especially to some cafes on St-Laurent street south of Jean-Talon...a 5 minutes walk from Cafe Union!

Ciao

Philippe

Espresso: Andreja Premium
Grinder: Rocky Rancilio

I bought my Silvia and Rocky at Union Cafe.

They have a lots of Rancilio 1,2,3 group(s) machines displayed, + giotto + gaggia + others. The show room is quite small in size compare to Faema and Cafe mali but they do have the Silvia and others very good machines.

They sell two roasts for espresso, the "BAR" and the "1/2 1/2 (half half), which is half BAR and half of some milder roast.
They seem to ship out a lot of boxes of coffee and would be roasting on a daily basis for all type of roast.

Union Café close around 5 on weekdays and is close on Sunday (I think). Chech theirs opening hours for visiting.

This is the place where I get my coffee. It is the best I found in Montreal yet. I go there a least once every two week to get a 1/2 of kilo and freeze it in 4 bags an use these bags in the next 2 weeks.

I had problem with the Rocky and they fixed it in less that 2 hours while I was having lunch in little Italie. It seem that the technician is good and know what he is doing. (As I understand, the problem was that the burrs where unbalance, and by putting a folded piece of paper between the frame and the top container, I was able to go 4-5 click finer and get the proper setting)

There is two roasters on St-Denis between Sherbrooke street and Mont-Royal street. One called “Au deux marie” and the other one called “Brulerie St-Denis”. Both sell about twice the price of Cafe Union and really the taste is not as good as the 1/2 1/2 that I get from CafeUnion.

There is an excellent store in Montreal called "Les importations cafe-creme". They have a store on St-Hubert, another in Ahuntsic (on Fleury) as well as in Westmount (on Victoria). They are working on a store website that will sell online products such as espresso machines, coffee and kitchen accessories. I personally bought my Mokita machine there and am very satisfied.  You can visit their website at Mod Edit: Your commercial link removed!
