Espresso: Rancilio Silvia Grinder: KyM knee from OE
Posted Fri Nov 6, 2009, 4:07pm Subject: Good coffee in Montreal?
Hi folks.
I've recently upgraded to a Ms Silvia and waiting on an OrphanEspresso handgrinder from my previous Krups steam toy and Breville grinder.
I live in the West Island of Montreal and I am having a hard time finding anybody close that *doesn't* look at me with glazed eyes when I ask about roasting dates... I'd like to try to get the best out of Ms Silvia, and I suspect that buying Brulerie St Denis at my local IGA won't be that helpful to me.
Any reasonable suggestions? Or do I get (beg) my wife, who works downtown, to make the occasional detour to a good coffee locale?

Merci Sylvain!
As it happens, I will be down around McGill with time on my hands on Sunday morning.
I'll probably end up dropping in there, as I should have my KyM grinder in hand Monday night, and want suitable grist for the mill (quite literally!).
Not sure about ordering by mail... I'm the only one drinking the coffee in the house, and 2 doubles a day won't be using even 1 pound fast enough to make it worthwhile.
I'll have a look at In Gamba, and try to resist dropping in at my other favourite spot, Dieu du Ciel.

I was in Montreal no that long ago and was excited to go to Gamba as they stock a wide range of roasters only to discover once I got there that the only one that had a roast date on it was Intelligentsia. You could also go to Cafe Myriade on Mackay, they stock 49th Parallel and there stuff all has a roast date on it.

I've been once to Caffe in Gamba, in Montreal. Their service is great. I've noticed that their espresso coffees tend to be brown rather than black, and I prefer black coffee. I've tried a couple of their coffees, including Intelligentsia Black Cat, but I didn't like them as much as the black Tanzanie/Brésil that I purchase at Brűlerie St-Denis, in Montreal and Brossard.
Any comments?

Pierre, what do you mean "black coffee" you mean a dark oily roast? If that is so, you'll be sad to know that this is not the trend at all. The darker roasts I've seen from 3rd-wave coffes I think would be redline and Gimme's leftist. You should try some Terroir Ethiopian Sidamo, north italian roast, if you're lucky you can get some from 49th also, same roast profile. Yummy. Of course pulling shots might be a bit different with these types of roasts (lower doses, specific temperature). But to each his own I guess.

There's something with the taste of brown coffee that I don't like. Funny, but I liked it better after it had sat for a month in the fridge...

Really? the only one without a roast date that I remember is Klatch's belle espresso. Terroir, Intelli, 49th all have roast dates.

Yes, I like it somewhat "oilier" than brown coffee, even though my grinder doesn't like oily coffee, because it has problems going down in the grinder. I sometimes have to shake the grinder to get things moving.
