i searched for a while and although my budget was slightly higher(about 400) found the best suppliers are on the west coast.  i ordered my machine from www.espressotec.com

they were cheaper and have a far better reputation than any of the places i looked into locally.

I don't think $100 - $150 for something brand new gets you into a machine that is really going to deliver excellent espresso.  I would go the used route.  Buying an unknown machine from an ad, lawn sale, on line has it's problems...fixing machines are often too expensive to take the chance.  Having them shipped from out of town is both expensive and can easily be damaged in the shipping.

I would go to the Faema store at Dupont and Christie, and check out the rather large supply of machines they have sitting right outside their rather comprehensive repair dept.  They have every type of machine there, from Baby Gaggias to big commercial machines...they will be more expensive than buying it used privetely I would imagine, but buying from them at least lets you know it has been checked by their repair dept.

I would see a way to up that budget of yours...at least a little bit....have a garage sale..procedes to the espresso fund!   LOL  or ask Santa.

And you didn't mention anything about a grinder?

EBAY is your best bet for a used machine. Otherwise a good Gaggia starts at about 250 300. Alfa Cappuccino @ 400 and Langstaff

Also, you are wasting your money if you buy anything for less that $400.  Really.

You might as well be giving your money to a hobo.

I checked out the espresso planet site and called to talk to them before purchasing my machine.  their prices were higher than espressotecs and I didn't get a good feeling talking to them on the phone.
