Subject: Hi Everyone!

:) I just joined this group...

I'm a self taught barista out of Kaslo, B.C (a very small town)...I love the coffeegeeks website, I've found so much useful information on it! the small shop I work at bought an espresso machine last year, so I did the best I could by finding things out online and using a video.  I'd really like to be much better at it...I've done the best I can on my own,  even to the point of making amatuerish latte art...so why am I telling you this? let me get to the point!

After reading your article on the Canadian Barista Championships I was wondering if you knew of anyone around the Kelowna/Vernon area who'd be interested in giving me some lessons in making espresso...or at least have the address of someone else I could ask this same question...

thanks for your help!

Hi Jamie, and welcome!

Being here on the Coast, I'll admit that I 'm not too familiar with many (any) shops in the Interior.  I'd guess that there would be at least one or two decent coffee shops in Kelowna that would be willing to give you some instruction. Plan yourself a little weekend getaway, and see what you can discover.

Also helpful might be the various videos Mark has here on his website. The one with Sammy doing his pour is great! A little search should yield some great results.

Good luck, and let us know how it goes!

Doug

Hey! Great to hear your determination...

What about the people down at Oso Negro Coffee? I don't know what their exact set up is down there is (they are a roaster), but I was under the impression that they served up espresso down there. They're right up your alley, being in Nelson. They have a webpage - somewhere. Just google Oso Negro coffee.

Oso Negro rocks!!  A must if in Nelson--well that and the Nelson Brewery.

Of course my coffee taste has developed a lot since I first started going there--an I haven't been there for awhile.  Still I am sure it is in the top 10%.

I am ubber stoked to see a coffee geek springing up in the heartland--there has to be a few more coffee guru's living in the interior that would surly take you under their wing?

You might have some luck if you talk with the owners of Bean to Cup, in Vernon.  I believe the owners are two very pleasant ladies, who might be sympathetic with your cause.  Explain to them you'd like to be schooled in the methods of the best baristi so you can compete to go to the CBC (you might have to go to western regionals in Vanc-EWW-ver to qualify).

Good luck!
