Hello all sorry about the english my czech is not up to speed yet.
Just though i would start a thread about quality czech coffee, and my experiences so far, now 'Czech coffee' to most people is the fine grind in-the-cup turkish style known locally as turiscka kava, i am on the lookout for drinkable espresso.
In Prague itself the only place that I stumbled upon was a starbucks clone called CoffeeHeaven in vaclavske namesky which served typical non-offensive, dumbed down franchise fare, great fitout/concept though.
All the way up in Jablonec nad Nisou there was a place called MyCafe in the main square serving up ok Illy although standards are slipping and it is a bit hit and miss more of a bar focus.
Liberec also has a MyCafe which i have not sampled.
Friends of mine are involved in a new Czech based hotel and restaurant group called Pytlon and they are opening a new outlet in Liberec near Jested and I will be having a hand in their barista education so possibly good things there and across the group.
Due to low cost of entry for bars, i.e. the concept of licensing does not exist it seems that espresso seems to rank second to the higher profit(?) alcoholic beverages available in all places as well as no espresso culture. While i understand the Nordic countries have a strong developing espresso culture how are the liquor licensing laws there? What suggestions do any Nord's have for developing espresso culture in Eastern Europe?

thanks for the post about our coffee culture:) frankly, its pretty bad...i have just returned from Vancouver and after running around Prague for days I havent yet tasted a good espresso...let alone a milk based drink! there are a few companies that roast 'good' quality coffee, lately i have been trying majkafe.cz, awesome pricing but the beans didnt come with the date of roasting and were not super good. anyways, i am just starting to work in Ebel Coffee in Prague, which has 5 cafes in downtown Prague and its own roasting company. similar position to yours... Stop by if you have time and i can show you around...btw, i am originaly from Decin and going skiing to Jested all the time.
well, right now i would not recommend it...i am struggling big time with roasting/preparation/machines etc, its just horrible, im just about to give up:) anyways, i work at the main location in Ungelt, near Old Town square...drop me a pm when you can stop by...

Now is availlable to get fresch roasting coffee in small roasters facillity in Kunratice.... I think the most fresh speciality coffee in Prague... the others is only some industry big roasters without a bit of hand work and love. i think mr. 2_czech must agree with that :o) ...
