Hello!
I've lived in Portugal for two months, and (perhaps because I'm from Seattle?) I'm not at all happy with the large-scale corporations that sell coffee here (nor the lack-of-knowledge or interest that the coffeeshop owners have or care to have). I'm considering opening my own coffee shop, and would like to know more about coffee suppliers, roasters, etc. I am particularly interested in sustainable/fairly-traded sources.
Whether I open one or not, I'd still like to be able to inexpensively order it for my own use.

My fiancé has been dying for the quality of coffee he had when he lived in Portugal, and he mentioned that he really likes the Sical Espresso one. I have been looking all over for a way to buy some, but I can't seem to find *anything*. Is there a way of getting it, other than being in Portugal itself?

Sical, huh? Isn't that a Nestle product? I really haven't been able to tell any difference at all between Sical, Delta, or any of the others around here. Of course, if the preparation were better, perhaps the product would, too. Like I've said before, every shot I've had here is prepared too hot with stale, smoke-absorbed beans, with little or no crema.

That doesn't sound too good at all... Not enough crema!? =( I'm from Italy, and although we have a myriad different types of drinks, one thing I can say is that man do I miss a good espresso tirato, caffè macchiato, and cappuccino. I find the coffees there have more flavor, are a little sweeter, actaully *taste* like coffee, and I myself tend for the medium roasts. I've been miserable as far as coffee is concerned in this northern area of Cali. And as per coffee in Portugal.. I havent' the slightest clue. My baby lived there for five years, and says the coffee here just cannot be compared. I do know the darker the roast and the more bitter the flavor, the more he likes it, but why Sical.. couldn't even begin to say. I just know that I need to find some.

What kind of coffee do you drink, btw?
Right now, I'm just sampling whatever I can my hands on, so I can find what I like. I'm from Seattle, and I'm used to having a variety of coffee beans and coffee shops to choose from. I've been all over Faro, Lagos, and Portimão and I have yet to find something that suits me yet. I like medium-to-dark roast...dopio ristretto or latte. They have something that sort of resembles a latte, although they milk they use here is that shelf stable stuff that doesn't really taste like milk. :)
If I could get my hands on some green, and a roaster, I'd be happy roasting it at home...but I need to find a roaster in Portugal first. :)

what type of roaster are you looking for? Cause it would seem to me that if you could find one here for instance all you'd have to do is get a voltage adapter and you would never have to worry about it. Heck, we could probably help each other out here :)

Oh, I would never trust my beans to a roaster with a voltage adapter. There are a lot of variables as it is, and I want complete control over every single one...adding an adapter would make the machine not perform exactly as it should. Besides, anything that requires a heating a device never gets up to the proper temperature when converting it to a different voltage.
At least...that's what I'm told. :) As for what kind of roaster, all I know right now is that I'm looking for a small-batch (1-3 lbs) drum roaster.

Hi John,
I was going to mention the STA roaster (200-500 grams), or the Ambex YM-2, 2 kilo 4.4 lbs (will do 5 lbs),you can roast as little as 1 lb, also the San Franciscan 1 lb sample roaster, & the 6 lb'er here, but there's lots of replies on the homeroast list. {;-)

Hello Dr. Zeus,
we had some great experience with http://www.amiganien.com. They specialise in European Espresso & Cappuccino Equipment and also feature ground and beans from bialetti and lavazza.
