Hey guys. I am going to be spending a significant amount of time in Amsterdam this summer and was looking on some recommendations on where to find great espresso.

I was in Amsterdam about a month ago and Espresso Fabriek (espressofabriek.nl) really took the cake. The people who work there are passionate about their coffee and happy to talk shop. They roast all of their beans in-store, nice and light, and brew on a beautiful 3-group lever Kees van der Westen machine or V60/vacpot/aeropress.
Two for Joy was also good. They overroasted their beans by my taste, but put a lot of effort and attention into the preparation. The Kenya pourover I got had wonderful honeysuckle aromas but did not come through in the cup. I would go again. A place I wouldn't waste my time on again is Brandmeesters. You hear a lot about it, but it's really wretched coffee–old, burned, and poorly prepared. The only thing worthwhile in the store is their collection of machines and tools for home use. Skip the coffee while you're there. And finally, the Starbucks "Concept Store" may be worth a visit depending on how much you're willing to take for the experience. The baristas were unknowledgeable but smug. The ones I talked to clearly had no idea of what's going on in the world of coffee outside the green bubble but seemed convinced that Starbucks had invented pourovers and were surprised that I didn't think my cup there was the best cup I had ever had. An illustrative exchange: Me-"So how much time does it usually take between when the beans are roasted and when you guys use them?" Answer-"It is not possible for this question to be answered. There is no date on the bags. Within a few months."
Anyway, Espresso Fabriek is a great place to hang out and they're happy to give recommendations for other places to go in town.

In addition to ahalt's excellent recommendations, you may want to try out Casa Brazuca at the Rijnstraat. I couldn't tell you much about the characteristics of its taste, as I am really no expert, but it is one of the nicer tasting espressos I have had.
